Hexagon Metrology presents efficient measuring solutions at EuroMold

Hexagon Metrology and some of its versatile measuring solutions will be on show at EuroMold 2011, the World Fair for Mould Making and Tooling, Design and Application Development.

At EuroMold 2011 in Frankfurt/Main, Hexagon Metrology will be presenting a wide range of products for every industrial metrology application, in particular mould making and tooling, design and application development, at Booth M46, Hall 8. Hexagon Metrology is a long-established and reliable partner in these fields.
Portable coordinate measuring machines from Hexagon Metrology are efficient measuring solutions for components of all sizes. Customers can benefit from enormous time and cost savings by simply being able to take the measuring system to where it's needed.

In the field of portable metrology, Hexagon Metrology is exhibiting the ROMER Absolute Arm, the most precise ROMER coordinate measuring machine. The new ROMER measuring arm, the first to be equipped with absolute encoders, greatly simplifies the process of measuring. With this technology, there is no need to initialise all the encoders, as was previously the case with every measuring arm – the user simply switches the measuring machine on and starts to measure.

At this year's EuroMold, Hexagon Metrology is also presenting the new generation of 3D white-light measuring systems under the Cognitens brand: the Cognitens WLS400M manual and the Cognitens WLS400A automatic systems use digital stereo-vision technology to capture high-precision 3D data. This technology finds worldwide applications, especially in the automotive industry, and provides rapid quality control.

A further highlight is the Leica Absolute Tracker AT901. This instrument is the heart of a portable high-performance measuring system. When used in conjunction with optical or tactile hand- or robot-guided sensors, such as the Leica T-Probe or the Leica T-Scan, the Leica Absolute Tracker AT901 transforms into a metrological multitalented performer.
Hexagon Metrology is also showing the DEA GLOBAL Silver, which is quicker, measures more accurately and is easier to handle than ever before. Scanning throughput has been increased by up to 35% compared with the previous models. Optimised movement algorithms, upgraded software and a new controller have produced still more productivity.
The Hexagon Metrology booth will also provide visitors with the opportunity of viewing TESA precision measurement instruments and TESA measuring machines (including TESA Micro-Hite height gauges and TESA Micro-Hite 3D, TESA Scan).

Also on view are m&h Inprocess metrology equipment as well as various probe systems and the latest version of the 3D Form Inspect software. This software is the proven measuring solution for the mould making and tooling industry, and allows all sides and all axes of geometric and other shapes to be measured and recorded directly on the machine tool. This saves time and enhances quality.

Renscan5™ retrofit upgrade at GE Oil and Gas

“Huge reductions in inspection time and the ability to measure form – REVO® has opened a new frontier”
GE Oil and Gas Florence has transformed the performance of a DEA Global CMM with a retrofit system direct from Renishaw, allowing far higher data collection rates and thus form analysis, never before practically possible on the DEA CMM

Every year, GE Oil and Gas invites customers to an open house at its factory in Florence, Italy. This year 800 customers saw the results of a GE Oil and Gas New Technology Introduction project - a DEA Global coordinate measuring machine (CMM), retrofitted with a Renishaw REVO® system and measuring impeller parts at a dramatic speed.

As Claudio Bartali (Manufacturing Technology Project Leader) explains “The demonstration was spectacular – inspection time on a typical impeller reduced by 4 times. However, that is not the main reason we started the project and employed Renishaw to retrofit the CMM with REVO. The exciting part will start soon when we use the massive amount of accurate REVO-measured data to compare the form of inspected surfaces with the 3D CAD models.”

The retrofit, performed directly by Renishaw with its own experienced engineers, replaced the previous head, touch trigger probe, DEA controller and PC-DMIS® software with the Renishaw Renscan5™ system - REVO 5-axis scanning head, UCC2 controller and MODUS™ software.

Saverio Chiari (Manufacturing Technology Leader) is delighted with how smoothly it went, “The Renishaw service is very good – they are very focused on customer support and have been very supportive in the changeover to REVO.”

With a requirement for 100% inspection, there is a high demand on the CMMs and programming systems, which need to adapt constantly. At the GE plant in Florence, the DEA Global is used to perform dimensional inspections on components varying in size and geometry up to 1000 mm diameter.

Hexagon Metrology Introduces New Leica Total Station At CMSC

Leica TDRA6000 Features Reflectorless 3D Measurement At 300 Meters

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I., July 22, 2009 -- Hexagon Metrology, Inc. today at the Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC) in Louisville, Kentucky, announced the North American debut of the new Leica TDRA6000 Total Station, the most accurate Leica Geosystems total station ever released for industrial use. This Leica Geosystems laser station has the ability to automatically target both reflective tape targets and corner cube reflectors. The unit can even measure without targets. Typical 3D point accuracy at 35 meters is .25mm with reflectors. Reflectorless accuracy is 1mm. The TDRA6000 is optimized for use within 300 meters from the base unit. This product replaces the TDA5005 total station.

Total stations are used for large-scale installation, assembly, measurement, adjustment and alignment applications, such as aerospace tooling, printing presses, process machinery, erection of wind turbine or antenna towers, supercollider arrays, and any application that requires the precision location of components in three-dimensional space.

Leica Geosystems' proprietary piezo direct drive technology has been incorporated into the Total Station to deliver high speed motorization and acceleration that is up to four times faster than the previous generation, but still allows for submicron level fine positioning. This technology has very low power consumption, requires minimal maintenance, and is nearly silent. The unit is now coupled with Leica's proprietary PowerSearch technology that quickly and automatically locates and locks onto a target, and re-locks onto a target in the event of an interruption in the beam. The TDRA6000 delivers high performance in a compact, portable, battery powered unit.

Measurement data collected with the TDRA6000 can be downloaded via a built-in Bluetooth connection into a metrology software package for further analysis and results reporting. The TDRA600 is immediately available for shipment.

Hexagon Metrology Introduces New PC-DMIS Vision with MultiCapture

Revolutionary measurement routine improves vision system productivity by 35% or more

North Kingstown, RI – July 16, 2009 – Wilcox Associates Inc., a Hexagon Metrology company, today introduced PC-DMIS Vision 2009 with a new patented MultiCapture feature that typically improves measurement productivity by 35%, or more when the part is densely populated with features requiring inspection. PC-DMIS Vision 2009 is a CAD-based, 3D vision measurement program for manual and DCC vision measurement systems, multi-sensor measurement systems and CMMs equipped with vision probes. The new version is available at no charge to users with a maintenance agreement. It also available as a retrofit for most popular vision and multisensor measurement systems.

In addition to the new MultiCapture feature, PC-DMIS Vision 2009 also includes RGB pixel adjustment for improved edge detection with color cameras, support for multi-core processors, and numerous improvements that enhance the software’s stability and lay the foundation for other advanced features in future releases. A demo showing a measurement routine with and without MultiCapture can be found at: http://pc-dmis.com/multicapture.

New Patented MultiCapture Feature

MultiCapture is a revolutionary vision measurement technology that automatically finds multiple features that fit within the same field of view and captures their measurement data simultaneously. Upon completing the measurements in a particular field of view, MultiCapture drives the camera to the next cluster of features and measures them in the same way. Multiple different feature types such as holes, slots and edges can all be measured simultaneously. This sequence continues until the inspection program is complete. MultiCapture also works with manual vision systems by prompting the user to move the viewfinder to successive zones of densely populated features.

Within PC-DMIS Vision 2009, MultiCapture is set as the default. No additional programming is needed to take advantage of productivity improvements that have been much as 70% for parts with complex, densely populated features, such as medical, electronic or other complex precision parts including micro hole dies, sieves, filters, fiber optics and inkjet nozzles.

RGB Adjustments Improve Measurement Consistency, Edge Detection

PC-DMIS Vision 2009 also includes another significant feature allowing the programmers to adjust RGB (Red/Green/Blue) sensitivity for features captured with color cameras to heighten contrast and dramatically improve edge detection. This capability improves measurement consistency in general and is particularly useful when edges on colored parts are ambiguous or undetectable using gray scale manipulation and lighting modifications.

PC-DMIS EMS (Enterprise Metrology Solutions)

PC-DMIS Vision 2009 uses the same software platform as other PC-DMIS EMS (Enterprise Metrology Solutions) software for CMMs, portable measurement systems, on-machine metrology solutions and other types of measurement equipment. Each of these EMS products relies on imported or directly accessed CAD models as the basis for fast and accurate measurement system programming.

This approach makes it easy to exchange programs or parts of programs, as well as results between different types of measurements systems and to compare the results. In addition, users of one type of PC-DMIS product can typically learn the basics of PC-DMIS on another type of measurement device in a few hours. This makes it easy to cross-train users on a wide range of measurement devices at minimal cost. Hexagon Metrology Ships CMM Arm-Scanner System

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI - Hexagon Metrology, Inc, announces the immediate availability of a combination laser scanning metrology package, which combines a Brown & Sharpe Global Performance bridge CMM with a ROMER INFINITE 2.0 7-axis portable arm with a ScanShark V4ix laser scanner that is plug-and-play swappable between both systems. The key to the inter-compatibility is the TESA kinematic joint that is shared between all ROMER scanning arms and TESASTAR-m equipped bridge machines. Companies can invest in a single scanner that can be leveraged to the strengths of two different types of measuring platforms.

“This package leverages several existing Hexagon brands and technologies into one complete package offering,” said Eric Bennett, Product Manager for bridge products. “There are definitely times when scanning with an arm is the fastest and most effective technique, for example, when the part is large and must be measured in place. Conversely, if you have lots of smaller identical products you would like to scan repeatedly, then it is useful to set up a program to scan batches of them automatically. With this package, you don’t have to choose between one or the other.”

Dave Armstrong, Product Manager for portable products, added, “There was a time when the substantial investment in a laser scanner meant it came down to buying either the bridge machine or the arm. With our offering, you don’t have to choose, you can have both. Other systems where the scanner is integrated or the connectors are incompatible simply don’t have this flexibility.”

Shared systems can do double duty as inspection systems as well as performing reverse engineering and 3D point cloud gathering tasks Either machine is also capable of performing point-to-point inspection on its own without the scanner being attached, so both machines can be used simultaneously, regardless of which one happens to be using the laser scanner.

A shared scanner package comes complete with a Brown & Sharpe Global Performance bridge CMM (there are nine standard sizes available), a ROMER INFINITE 2.0 7-axis arm (there are six standard sizes available), a ScanShark V4ix probe, complete cabling, software and control boxes for each system, plus application software and a computer for each system. The packages are available for immediate shipment.
