Wenzel introduces new grind burn gear surface quality control and testing capability for geartec gear measuring machines and wenzel lh gear measuring machines

By using the measuring features of Wenzel gear measuring machines combined with Barkhausen noise analyzer sensors and controls, gear surface defects like grind burn can now be detected.

In a continuing effort to enhance the capabilities of Wenzel gear measuring equipment, Wenzel has introduced a new feature that detects any presence of grind burn or pits on gears that are being measured on any Wenzel GearTec gear measurement machine.
The integration of this new grind burn detection capability was developed in association with Stresstech GmbH, a leading German producer of non-destructive process control equipment. The sensor technology being applied here utilizes the Magnetic Barkhausen Noise Method. This method is based on inductively detecting a noise-like signal generated when a magnetic field is applied to a ferromagnetic material. Barkhausen Noise can be used to analyze the micro-structure of a materials’ surface in terms of hardness and its microstructural condition.

Chris Pomm, Wenzel technical director explains, “Because gear measuring machines utilize very sophisticated programming software to inspect all geometrical features of gears and gear teeth, it’s logical that a sensor adapted to the same measuring arm, making many of the same inspection movements, should be able to inspect for grind burn and pits that can occur on the flanks of ground gear teeth. Typically chemical acid baths and optical methods are used to check for grind burn. With our new method, grind burn on gear flanks can be analyzed at the same time inspection occurs, eliminating the need for additional processing.”

CMM BUILDER, WENZEL, INTRODUCES INTEGRATED COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY WORKSTATION CALLED “exaCT®”

New inspection product provides contactless 3D measurements of internal and external part surfaces allowing non-destructive and timesaving inspection of small and medium sized complex parts.

Wenzel GmbH recently introduced at the Control Show in Germany a new Integrated Computed Tomography Workstation call exaCT®. This new product was developed by the Wenzel Group Company Wenzel Volumetrik headed by Dr. Martin Simon a renowned expert in the field of Computer Tomography.
The new inspection machine, Fig. 1, allows the contactless 3D measurement of internal and external part surfaces allowing non-destructive and timesaving inspection of small and medium sized complex parts with small features manufactured from plastics, composites, ceramics, aluminum or magnesium.

Computed Tomography is an imaging method originally developed for the medical industry where digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the internals of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation.

Monster CMM Meets Military Needs

When Science and Engineering Services (SES) recently leased 500,000 sq ft of the old Dunlop tire manufacturing facility in Huntsville, AL, they needed a big CMM -- and Xspect Solutions found one for them. The supplier of rebuilt and remanufactured CMMs has extensive expertise with large CMMs. So when SES, a Huntsville-based Dept. of Defense ISO 9001:2000, AS 9100:2004 Rev B and FAA approved 145 Repair Station manufacturing suppl ier, went to the Internet for a supplier of a large gantry-type CMM, Xspect stood out as the best potential source.

“We have recently secured a significant number of new hardware and services contracts from the U.S. Dept. of Defense and other related OEM manufacturers that required more manufacturing floor space to accommodate programs involving military equipment like tank components (turrets) and helicopters,” explains Millard Jernigan, VP for special projects for Huntsville SES. “The helicopter work includes modification, upgrade, rebuild, and painting of all types of Army helicopters. In Huntsville, we have had a 61,000 sq ft manufacturing facility for the past 12 years, but we recently leased 500,000 sq ft of the old Dunlop Tire facility and have completely refurbished this space to handle some of our new programs.”

The space is completely heated, air-conditioned, and newly painted. Large milling machines and a large waterjet cutting machine with a 13 x 13 ft bed, capable of cutting up to 8-inch armor plate, were installed. The capital investment program included a large CMM to provide the high-quality inspection needed for checking large airframes.

GAGE AND GEAR MANUFACTURER TIFCO GAGE & GEAR ADDS SECOND NEW WENZEL GEAR MEASURING MACHINE TO EXPAND INSPECTION CAPABILITY

Tifco Gage & Gear relies on a “fast turn-around” for gage and gear manufacturing. Fast and accurate inspection is key to maintaining that capability, and Wenzel gear inspection equipment has been a valuable resource.

Several years ago Tifco Gage & Gear, a division of Delta Research Corporation was an exhibitor at the Gear Expo in Detroit. Like many exhibitors at trade shows, Tifco was looking for some new equipment as well. In this case, it was new gear inspection capability. Because all of the major gear inspection equipment manufacturers were exhibiting too, Bob Sakuta, president of Tifco selected a sample precision gear and took it to each of the manufacturer’s booths and asked them how fast could they program the gear and inspect it. Wenzel was the winner, and the winner by a fairly large margin. At that point, Mr. Sakuta ordered a new Wenzel WGT350.

Mr. Sakuta explains, “The Wenzel WGT350 is a dedicated 4-axis gear tester. All axes are made from natural Impala black granite, which we believe insures excellent thermal behavior, and no-wear air bearings on all linear axes and the rotary table to provide the ultimate in high-accuracy performance compared to the mechanical bearings used in all competitor’s machines. The hydrostatic rotary table with disengageable dirve allows a manual rotation of the table during part set-up which minimizes set-up time. The machine has a fully counterbalanced tailstock that can support longer gears, tools and shafts, typical of the types of products Tifco produces. Workpiece diameter capability is from 5 to 400mm with a measurable gear face width of 500mm. Gears up to 400-lbs can be inspected.”

Scott Sakuta, manager of the quality control department, adds, “The ease of programming of the WGT350 is really what sold me. Its database is based on Windows® technology and is extremely user-friendly. The old DOS based systems used by other gear inspection machine manufacturers are really ‘old school’ and not what today’s computer-savvy technicians like to use. The fact that the software allows workpiece data records to be linked to digital photos facilitates selection and positionally-accurate clamping, providing the user with quick and precise measuring results. Actually, we have been able to program and inspect gears in half the time of our older inspection equipment.”

Scott Sakuta also adds, “We initially discovered that the appearance, form and interpretation of the Wenzel gear inspection reports were a bit disconcerting to our customer base which for years has been used to seeing only M&M gear inspection reports. As a result, we worked very diligently with Xspect Solutions and Wenzel software people to develop a report look that was very similar to what the industry was accustomed to.”

Just recently, Tifco added new capability in their quality Control Department with the addition of a new Wenzel LH GMM (Gear Measuring Machine). “We began to see our aerospace, automotive, marine and agricultural customer’s needs expanding as their supplier bases began to constrict,” Bob Sakuta notes. “We wanted to be in position to provide additional value-added services which could include different types of shafts, housings and larger gears that previously we had not provided. We had all the manufacturing capability that would be required; we just needed more flexible inspection capability for these types of parts. For that reason we purchased the Wenzel bridge-type Model 6.7.5 GMM. This GMM uses the same gear controller, imbedded rotary table, and software that are used on the Wenzel WGT range. Now, not only can we measure larger gears up to 600 mm diameter, but we also can measure other rotation-symmetrical parts as well as a broad range of prismatic parts. This type of inspection machine allows us to perform production monitoring, prototype development or reverse engineering. The vertical GMM machine design, compared to traditional gear checkers, is more convenient for measuring internal gears.”

Bob Sakuta concludes, “We continue to have a very good experience working with Xspect Solutions on our CMM issues over the years. We have developed the same type of long-term customer/supplier relationship with them that we like to have with our own customers. We’re confident that if there is something new and beneficial to our companies with respect to measuring, Xspect Solutions with their high quality line of Wenzel equipment will bring it to our attention. We now have three Wenzel machines, a CMM, a WGT350 Gear Inspection Machine and an LH GMM at our two plants as well as an OpenDMIS upgrade for our older Federal CMM. We are extremely pleased with their operation and performance.”

Xspect Solutions, Inc. headquartered in Wixom, Michigan, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wenzel GmbH of Germany. Xspect Solutions is the Number 3 supplier of CMMs in the North American metrology market including; new Wenzel CMMs, and is the world’s largest supplier of pre-owned CMM equipment. Xspect Solutions also supplies new Wenzel CMMs, new LH GMMs as well as OpenDMIS® software to the North American markets.

MEDICAL COMPONENTS MANUFACTURER, TOMZ CORPORATION, ADDS NEW WENZEL CMM WITH OPENDMIS™ SOFTWARE

Unfavorable experience with PCDMIS software upgrading, led Connecticut precision CNC machining company, Tomz Corporation, to purchase a new Wenzel machine with new OpenDMIS software.

Tomz Corporation is a leading supplier of precision CNC machined titanium, cobalt, stainless steel, aluminum and plastic for the medical industry. Surgical instrumentation, medical tooling and implants make up the bulk of the medical products Tomz manufacturers to TS16949 standards. In process inspection by CMMs is a necessary component of the manufacturing process to not only insure the resulting quality, but to insure a level of dimensional integrity that minimizes scrap….and ultimately the profitability of the contract.

Gary Labbe, president of the Tomz Corporation Plastics Division says, “We have been using two CMMs for over ten years to measure and report the quality on the series of acrylic plastic parts that we manufacture for a variety of blood analyzer and dialysis machines. In that time, we have attempted to advance and improve the operation of those machines by upgrading with new software. Our experience with that process has been mixed. One of our CMMs is a Brown & Sharpe Model DEA Mistral that we upgraded with new PCDMIS software. The software upgrade never materialized like we expected and it became a time-consuming and irritating issue because we were not able to convert our part programs to the new versions and our computers kept crashing. Ultimately we had to maintain three different versions on two different PCs which just weren’t working. We made the decision to take a new approach and purchase a new machine with new software. After a thorough benchmarking search, we settled on a Wenzel LH 6.7.5 with a SP25 scanning head, OpenDMIS™ software, and a broad service package from Wenzel/Xspect Solutions, Inc. We have been very pleased with the speed and scanning ability of the Wenzel machine.”

Labbe explains, “What we were very impressed with was the package that Wenzel/Xspect Solutions offered us. They examined our current situation and focused on trying to utilize the best of what we had and combine it with the new Wenzel machine. For example, the dimensioning and tolerances of the part prints that we receive from our customers were designed for use with PCDMIS. That presented some issues with respect to inputting the true-position of form tolerances on some part programs. Xspect Solutions built a software patch that could accommodate those issues and make them fully operational with OpenDMIS. This took just a few days to complete. This was necessary because our original DMIS software had a few commands interpreted differently to the current 5.0 standard. Because our programs had been originally created in pure native DMIS code, transition to a new CMM could have been very painful. However, what we discovered was that programming in the universal ISO Standard CMM language of DMIS is both technologically and vendor independent. The DMIS Standard works…and while many CMM purchase decisions are taken without any thought towards what will happen to the CMM in the future, DMIS offers the only long-term seamless and guaranteed migration path. At the end of the day, the CMM structure and the part programs will outlive the CMM software, so portability is critical over the long haul.”

The Wenzel LH 6.7.5 is a CNC bridge type CMM with a Renishaw scanning probe system. The machine has a measuring range of 650 x 750 x 500 mm. The machine features a Y-axis that is machined directly into the impala black granite base plate providing optimal long-term accuracy and stability. The X and Y axis guide-ways are bellows protected against contamination. High-speed dynamic servo drives with position monitoring provide the axes movement. A compact HT 400 joystick teach-pendant control is provided for inputting mouse-like function. It also has context-sensitive function buttons with two-stage speed selection and variable speed adjustment in all operation modes which results in sensitive movement via joystick or for CNC programming debugging.

Wenzel GmbH is the 4th largest CMM builder in the world and manufacturers its CMMs intrinsically accurate, negating the need for the huge error compensation files to achieve quoted accuracies, which have become the norm in past years from most CMM manufacturers. The black granite used on Wenzel CMMs is processed in-house at their impressive manufacturing facilities in Germany, not imported from China pre-finished…which is now the industry norm.

WENZEL GEARTEC TO EXHIBIT NEW HYBRID CMM AND GEAR MEASURING MACHINE AT GEAR EXPO

Unique new Wenzel CMM and gear measuring machine has been designed specifically to measure the large gears and pinions used in the wind energy industry.

“Wenzel Geartec will be introducing a unique new hybrid gear measuring machine at the Gear Expo in Indianapolis September 15-18 2009”, says Keith Mills, president of Xspect Solutions, Inc. the wholly owned subsidiary of Wenzel GmbH of Germany.

Mills explains, “Wenzel has developed this machine to specifically meet the demand of the wind energy gear manufacturing community where large internal and external gears and pinions require highly accurate measuring as well as traditional CMM measuring of prismatic parts. Traditional gear inspection machines are typically mechanical bearing devices with horizontal arms holding the scanning probe. To simply expand this type of machine design concept, that was originally developed to measure 500mm diameter gears, and apply it to 2500mm diameter gears, doesn’t work. For that reason, Wenzel has developed this new hybrid machine design that uses an all-granite, air bearing structure, with a bridge-type construction so the probe can provide a much higher level of dynamics and scanning performance with no mechanical bearing wear over time. In addition, the machine requires no special foundation. ”

The Hybrid LHGT 2600 machine, Fig. 1, has a prismatic measuring volume of 1500mm x 2500mm x 1200mm with an imbedded hydrostatic rotary table flush-mounted inside an Impala black granite machine base. The table and fixture can measure and support gears up to 2600mm diameter and weighing up to 20,000lbs. A removable tailstock column can also be mounted on the base to measure and support pinion gear shafts up to 1900mm in length, Fig. 2. The machine uses Renishaw SP80 scanning technology.

Mills adds, “We have currently sold three of these new LHGT 2600 hybrid machines…one in Europe and two here in the United States.”

Xspect Solutions, Inc. headquartered in Wixom, Michigan, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wenzel GmbH of Germany. Teledyne Brown Selects Large Wenzel

CMM to Measure Aerospace and Defense Components

Xspect has been selected by Teledyne Brown of Huntsville, Alabama to supply a Wenzel LH20.50.15 Scanning CMM. The All Granite CMM with measuring range of 2000mm x 5000mm x 1500mm was selected following a detailed analysis of offerings by a selection committee. The Wenzel Gantry style machine requires no foundation and will measure to an accuracy of 3 microns. The CMM design incorporates twindrive/twin scales on the Y axis to ensure the bridge does not ‘crab’ and its ‘high drive’ design ensures no bridge ‘sway’ or oscillation during rapid accelerations and decelerations. The order was secured by Xspect against stiff competition; Wenzel’s superior build quality and materials were recognized by the Teledyne selection committee. The machine is values at over $600,000.
